Raleigh Ranks in Top 10 for Best Cities for College Grads by RENT.com
Rent.com compiled a list of the best cities for college graduates based on unemployment rates, mean annual income, cost of living and rental inventory. Unemployment data was pulled from March 2012 and given double weight as obtaining a job would be a college graduate’s main focus.
Raleigh, NC scored in the top 10 with an unemployment rate of 7.8%, cost of living index of 98.2 and a mean annual income of $45,220.Raleigh is one third of the Research Triangle metropolitan region, along with Durham and Chapel Hill. There are several research universities in the area such as North Carolina State, Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. People are drawn to Raleigh for affordable housing and beautiful weather. With an economy based on three local universities, post-grads looking for jobs in industries like biotech or computers are able to do well.
Raleigh-Cary, NC Ranks #3 Best Cities for Jobs this Summer
ManpowerGroup surveyed more than 18,000 employers in 100 metropolitan areas to find out who’s hiring, who’s firing and who plans to maintain their current staff levels in the third quarter of 2012. Of the surveyed employers, 21% anticipate an increase in staffing levels in their third quarter hiring plans, while 6% expect a decrease in payrolls. The difference between those numbers gives you what ManpowerGroup calls a net employment outlook of 15%–or 11% when seasonally adjusted, which is still up from 8% for the same period last year and from 10% last quarter. Seventy-one percent of employers expect no change in their staffing, and the final 2% of employers are uncertain.
Raleigh-Cary, NC Ranks #7 for Big City Jobs by Forbes
Forbes ranked all 398 current metropolitan statistical areas based on employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics from November 2000 through January 2012. Rankings are based on recent growth trends, mid-term growth, long-term growth and the region’s momentum.
Rankings were broken down by size since regional economies differ markedly due to their scale. For the big cities list, 65 MSAs were ranked that each have more than 450,000 jobs.

Cary is the smartest city in North Carolina and the seventh smartest community in the country, according to a new ranking from American City Business Journals, the parent company of the Triangle Business Journal. Cary, NC Named a Walk-Friendly Community (WFC)
The WFC is a national organization that accredits communities that promote pedestrian traffic. Walking is a way of life for many in Cary and the certification is well deserved.
Cary is one of three communities in all of North Carolina to have earned the certification. With all of the incredible parks and trails in Cary, it is no surprise. Davidson and Charlotte, NC were also designated a Walk Friendly Community.
Cary was credited with having a walk-friendly community based on but not limited to:
- Town of Cary staff resources encourage pedestrian traffice - walking
- Well over 60 Miles of greenways and trails and almost 200 miles in planning.

Wake County Rated # 15 for Best Places in America for Where the Jobs Are by CNNMoney.com
Abundant Job Opportunities are a major factor in determining where you want to live. Wake County made the list of the top 25 based on job growth experienced over the last decade.
The job growth in Wake County from 2000-2010 increased 35.9 – apparently quite the job machine! The local economic development council reports almost a thousand new positions since March.
The hub of it all is Research Triangle Park, with more than 170 firms that employ about 48,000 workers there. Its impressive tenant list includes: IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, Cisco Systems and DuPont to name some of the larger companies.
Wake County attracts businesses and will do what is necessary to keep them. When Red Hat alluded that it was considering moving its headquarters out of Raleigh, the state gave them $18 million in grants. The Linux software developer plans to stay as well and will create 540 jobs over the next decade.
Forbes Ranks Raleigh No. 1 in U.S. for Increase in Young Families
Forbes and demographer Wendell Cox ranked the regions in the U.S. with the biggest increases in children 5-17 and Raleigh NC came in on top at #1.
Raleigh has had an almost 50% increase in residents in this age bracket over the last ten years. There are 70,000 more kids in the Triangle now than a decade ago. The region also experienced the second-highest overall population increase, the second-biggest surge in educated migrants and the third-highest job growth over the past two decades. It also ranked among those regions seeing the biggest jump in new immigrants. The Triangle Area’s strong economy and low cost of living are the main factors contributing to the enormous growth that they are experiencing.

The scoring for the smartest cities of the future was based on 52 metropolitan areas with more than 1,000,000 population. They were ranked by percentage gains in people with college educations compared with the population over 25 years of age between 2007 and 2009. The Raleigh Chamber of Commerce has announced that Raleigh ranks 14th out of 65 large cities in Joel Kotkin’s list of 2011 Best Cities for Job Growth, finishing ahead of such cities as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Austin, Texas in quality of life. Raleigh outperformed those cities in population growth and educational attainment, and all except Boston in median household-to-cost-of-living ratio, while having a better unemployment rate than Philadelphia and New York City.

To determine the next boom towns in the U.S., Forbes, with the help of Mark Schill at the Praxis Strategy Group, took the 52 largest metro areas in the and ranked them based on various data indicating past, present and future vitality. Job growth accounted for 1/3 of the score and was based on performance over the past decade with a focus over the last two years. The remaining 2/3 was calculated using a broad range of demographic factors including rate of family formation, growth in educated migration, population growth and desirability as a home destination or business start-up.
Raleigh NC ranked #2 on the list as it has experienced the second highest overall population increase and the third highest job growth over the last twenty years. Raleigh is considered a magnet for technology companies because of lower expenses and less regulation. Affordable housing and lower taxes also makes Raleigh a desirable place to live.

11 States Where Unemployment Is Dropping The Fastest
While the national unemployment rate might be bouncing back and forth - currently at 8.7%, some states are moving forward and jump starting their economies. New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that some states are outpacing others, significantly.
The unemployment rate in North Carolina has fallen 1.4% in the last year. With many businesses coming to North Carolina or adding jobs like SAS, unemployment should go down even further. Raleigh added jobs last year and lowered the unemployment rate to 8.4%. Raleigh and Cary are affordable places to live, and are ranked among the best places to retire.
